Plantar Warts

Plantar warts often form on the soles of the feet but can appear anywhere on the feet, including the toes. They often appear in clusters on the foot and are typically rough, hard, and scaly. Plantar warts sometimes also have tiny black dots in the center, which are actually clotted blood vessels. Plantar warts are not always painful, but can cause discomfort on the bottom of the foot when walking.

Plantar warts are caused by a virus that prompts the body to produce excess keratin in the top layer of the skin. The excess keratin results in the formation of warts. Walking around barefoot at a public pool, locker room, or other damp area increases the risk of developing plantar warts on the feet. Plantar warts tend to be more common in kids and teens, as well as individuals with a compromised immune system.
